Do You Really Know Your Employees?

59%. That’s the fraction of reference checks that uncovered discrepancies in information provided by applicants for US motor-dealer jobs, according to payroll services firm ADP. The figure is the highest discrepancy rate among eight US industries, ranging from manufacturing to transportation. Motor-retailer applicants also had the highest percentage of past driving violations (43%), ADP says.

The results come from ADP’s regular review and report from their applicants screening service, which makes worrying reading. And of course it poses the question, are we any better in the UK?

In an industry where the rate of personnel ‘churn’ is accepted as high it seems inevitable the UK endures similar problems albeit, to date, no UK organisation has yet published comparative statistics.

The issue ADP’s facts clearly illustrate is the cost to business this type of ‘fraud’ causes and the inevitable contribution it makes to increased staff turnover. To illustrate this issue, Autointel’s own ‘barometer’ of personnel churn indicates 14% of dealer staff change every year, based on a panel of nine key roles monitored within dealerships, clearly costing the industry millions of pounds.

With over twelve years of monitoring the dealer sector every day, perhaps Autointel should develop a ‘history-check’ resource not for cars, but your next employee instead?
